Look at my things!

I have always loved making things. As a kid it was bracelets made from hemp cord, paper mache and origami hats from newspaper, or model rockets and picture frames with my dad. Growing up my dad was always building or fixing something while my mom was sewing, crafting, or scrapbooking. Both of them have a heavy DIY instinct. I have always paused before calling myself an artist but I have never shyed away from the label of maker.

Here are some things I have made! Look! Look!

Diamond Kite - Priority mail envelope, bamboo skewers, packing tape

As winter is on the way out, kites have been floating into my mind with the wind. I picked up a couple of priority mail envelopes (free!) and made the biggest diamond kite I could with one of them. Skewers from the cabinet and packing tape to hold it together. I love this site for kite making: MBK - My Best Kites. There is a treasure trove of information on making kites of all sorts. This one is the simple diamond. It came together in under an hour and was flying well (if not a bit erratic) in a turbulent wind. The test flight was in the side yard just before some rain; there was not a lot of room to let the line out! Very cute kite and it flies surprisingly well! I have a couple more envelopes, check back for another project made from them!
